Metaplanet Acquires Additional Bitcoin

On May 7, 2025, Tokyo-based investment firm Metaplanet announced the acquisition of an additional 555 Bitcoin (BTC) for approximately ¥7.6 billion ($53.5 million), bringing its total holdings to 5,555 BTC. This purchase solidifies Metaplanet's position as the largest public corporate holder of Bitcoin in Asia, with its total holdings valued at over $536 million at current market prices. The acquisition was executed at an average price of $96,134 per Bitcoin.
To finance its ongoing Bitcoin accumulation strategy, Metaplanet announced plans to issue an additional ¥3.6 billion ($25 million) in zero-coupon bonds to EVO FUND, following a similar bond issuance just days prior. These bonds, which bear no interest and are redeemable at face value upon maturity, are part of the company's innovative approach to funding its Bitcoin purchases . Metaplanet's aggressive accumulation strategy mirrors that of other major players in the crypto space, such as Strategy, which recently announced plans to raise $84 billion for Bitcoin acquisitions.
The market responded positively to Metaplanet's announcement, with the company's shares closing up 11.45% at ¥477 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange . This surge reflects growing investor confidence in Metaplanet's strategic positioning within the cryptocurrency sector. The company's commitment to expanding its Bitcoin holdings underscores a broader trend of corporate adoption of digital assets as strategic treasury reserves.
